January: An Exhaustive Report

betty

Hello there! Quite a month it’s been, no? January was a little light on movie reviews due to a perfect storm of factors:

– More movies than usual opened without being screened for critics.
– More of my weekends than usual (when I would usually catch up with those unscreened movies) were occupied by other responsibilities.
– Sundance. It always gets in the way, but this year it felt especially disruptive to the normal flow of things.
– I helped launch a new movie website (more below).

For your convenience, here’s what I did review in January:

New movies:
The Bye Bye Man
I Am Michael
Split
Underworld: Blood Wars
(What I missed: Sleepless, Monster Trucks, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, A Dog’s Purpose)

December releases expanding nationwide:
Hidden Figures
Patriots Day
Silence
Toni Erdmann
(What I missed: The Founder, Live by Night, Gold)

Sundance:
Call Me by Your Name
Get Out
I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore
XX
Diary part 1
Diary part 2

In other news, Crooked Scoreboard, a sports-and-culture site, is expanding to be an everything-and-culture site, and they recruited me to be the movie editor. I’ll be writing some pieces, too. We’re starting small (it’s a part-time gig), trying to build up a stable of good writers. (If you’re a freelancer and want our guidelines, email me: eric at ericdsnider etc.) Feel free to peruse our latest offerings and share them with friends or enemies.
